INTRODUCTION
How does a cell function like a city? Think about the sites and sounds of a city. You see people and cars moving about, buildings, restaurants, and lights everywhere. What a flurry of activity!
Cells, the basic units of life, can be compared to a city. Cells are building and breaking down material. Cells release energy from foods, and then use that energy to make needed cell parts. Cells function to make your body operate like a well run city.
ORGANELLE = Microscopic structures in a cell that have specialized functions (eg, mitochondria and the nucleus). [Source: NHBLI/NCBI Glossary ] TASK
1. Research and answer the following questions:
the functions of cell organelles
draw or describe what the organelle looks like
designate where it is located within the cell
create an analogy (comparison) for part of the city that has a similar job to the organelle.
EX: The Golgi Bodies are similar to the Post Office or UPS because the Golgi Bodies is where packaging & shipping occurs
Each group assigned will be in charge of one organelle/structure. Once the group is completed they must share their information with the remaining groups to complete the questions and table.
